The students at St. Bernadette participate in many activities that are fun and educational. The classes take trips to Noyes Park where they go swimming. There are various field trips to the Milwaukee Museum, Milwaukee Zoo, cultural events, and more. The St. Bernadette students sponsor an 11-year-old girl in the Philippines, Carmi Arago. Carmi lives with her parents and four siblings in Binangonan, Philippines. Her father is a tailor and her mother is an occasional fish vendor. Their limited income forces them to live below the poverty level. Our students raise money to pay for Carmi's school tuition, all school supplies, her uniform, doctor visits, and dental visits. One way we raise money is by holding a "penny war" during Catholic Schools Week. Students (and patrons at our Parish Chicken Dinner) put money into jars representing the grades at St. B. Whichever class's jar has the least amount of money at the end is the winner of an out-of-uniform day. This year over $536 was raised, and the JrK class won for the second year in a row. Thank you to all who participated in this year's Penny War. The St. Bernadette Chess Club, in collaboration with WSCF (Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation), held a state-wide chess tournament on February 9 for students in Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. Eighty-three kids from 18 different schools competed. St. Bernadette was represented by 24 students. There were three divisions: K-2 (primary), K-5 (intermediate), and K-8 (advanced). St. Bernadette placed third in the K-2 team division, fourth in the K-5 team division, and first in the K-8 team division. Congratulations St. B chess players! The annual Spring Musical is always a big hit. This year's play, Peter Pan, will be performed on April 10, 11, 12, and 13. Be sure to mark your calendar to attend at least one performance. At Christmastime, the Youth Choir often sings at Mayfair Mall. Each year, the students perform in the Christmas Concert. Click here to see a PowerPoint presentation of some of the 2004 concert. The students also work on projects promoting peace, such as the peace parade and peace doves. The 6th, 7th, and 8th Graders participate in the annual Knights of Columbus Knowledge Contest, and they always "do us proud!" Each spring, St. Bernadette School holds a career day. Many of our parents, as well as friends from the community, give of their time to tell the students about their various careers. Below, Al Olivares, owner and president of ACO Trucking, shows his semi to students and tells them what it's like to be a truck driver. He demonstrated a little bit of what it was like owning the company, too, as he had to answer business phone calls while talking with the students! ![]() ![]() Did your child forget to bring home a permission slip for a field trip, but the deadline/field trip is tomorrow? No worries! Click here to download a permission slip that you can fill out at home and send to school with your child, preferably before the day of the field trip! | ||||
