Principal's Message

St. Bernadette is a Catholic elementary school whose purpose is to develop a firm scholastic and social foundation within a Christian atmosphere. We strive to develop a positive self-concept in each student. We prepare our students to meet standards of learning as set by national and state goals and school expectations. As a social being, each student is expected to act in a responsible manner and to contribute in a positive way to the class, the school, the family, and the community.

On January 30, 2005, St. Bernadette School joined with 2.6 million students in more than 8,000 other Catholic schools in the United States to observe Catholic Schools Week. At this time of the year, we reflect on the mission of Catholic schools, and in particular, our school, St. Bernadette.

Traditionally, the role of the Catholic school has been to act as a vehicle for assisting parents in developing the Catholic Faith in youngsters as well as providing a solid academic foundation. The Catholic school prepares the young Catholic to enter the adult world as a productive, Catholic member of society whose life and actions reflect the values instilled in the home and the school. In recent years, with more and more families of different faiths choosing to send their children to our schools, the dimension of evangelization has become an important focus.

Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee participate in a seven-year planning and evaluation process. After two years of self-study, an accreditation team from the Archdiocese visits the school to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the school program. A five-year improvement plan is developed from this evaluation, and then the process begins again. In early December, St. Bernadette School was visited by the accreditation team. We are proud of the commendations that the school received and would like to share some of them with you.
  • The parish leadership should be commended for its commitment and support of Catholic education; its successful collaborative parish/school efforts have achieved a high level.
  • All elements of the school community should be commended for their longstanding commitment to meeting the educational needs of all children.
  • The evaluation team commends the school for its technology education and the high level of curriculum integration.
  • The athletic association should be commended for their vision of athletics that truly reflects gospel values and shows a commitment to students at all skill levels.
  • The school should be commended for implementing a comprehensive Catholic identity with a diverse population of students.
  • The school community is commended for the warm, welcoming environment they provide for parents and students.
  • The students are commended for their enthusiasm and their willingness to share their pride in St. Bernadette School.
  • The school is commended for the attractive campus, particularly the displays of student work.
According to these and the many other commendations, St. Bernadette Parish can take pride in the success of its educational ministry through the day school. We appreciate the ongoing support that parish members have shown toward the school. We ask for your continued support through prayer, service, and financial resources. With your help, we look forward to continuing the day school ministry of St. Bernadette Parish for years to come.

God's peace and blessings,

Mary Lorusso, Principal
