HEALTH ISSUES

HEALTH SERVICES
St. Bernadette School has access to health services through the Milwaukee Public Health Department. We are in contact with them regarding communicable diseases and are in compliance with Milwaukee Archdiocesan policies.

OUTSIDE RECESS
Illness that keeps the student from participating in outside recess means the student is too ill to be in school that day. Exceptions will only be granted for an injury which could be aggravated by exercise, providing a doctor's recommendation is submitted. A final decision rests with the Principal. The School will not be responsible for a student who disregards a medical directive in this regard.

ILLNESS IN SCHOOL
Students who become ill in school must be picked up in a timely manner by the parent or guardian once notified. No student will be sent home unless accompanied by a parent or emergency contact designated by the parent.

CONTAGIOUS DISEASES
In the case of a contagious disease (i.e. chicken pox, strep throat, head lice, et cetera), the child must be kept home until all danger of contagion has passed. Contact your physician with any questions.

INJURIES
Children, especially the very young, need to be assured that it is always appropriate to notify an adult when an injury is serious, especially relating to the head, neck, back, losing consciousness, excessive bleeding, et cetera. Parents will be notified of a serious injury. In the case of serious injury, the School will activate appropriate medical emergency measures if the parent or guardian cannot be reached.

MEDICATION
The School will not administer medication of any kind (prescription or non-prescription), including inhalers, without a written consent form signed by the parent. In case of a prescription medication, a form from the prescribing physician must also be on file. These forms can be found in the Appendix of the Family-Student Handbook. Additional forms are available from the School Office. Medication will be kept by the classroom teacher. Any exception to this must be requested by the attending physician. Medication will be kept by the classroom teacher. Any exception to this must be requested by the attending physician. All medication must be in original containers

PERSONAL HYGIENE
Students are reminded to be aware of their personal hygiene and to take the appropriate steps, including daily bath/shower; clean clothing; clean, combed hair; and use of deodorant, especially after physical education activities.
